Title: Banged Up
Pairings: Ryo/Shige
Rating: PG-13
Summary: It's a tough job being a prison warden. Shige knows this all too well.
Notes: Probably the most fluffiest Prison AU you could come across. Really. And I say prison AU in the most loosest sense as well. I didn't intend for it to be realistic. Un-beta'd.
Jimusho Prison houses some of Japan's most prominent young male offenders. Ranging from inmates serving a sentence of under a year or that are awaiting trial, to those serving longer periods of time. Despite it's young head and staff, Jimusho is known as one of the countries most efficiently run prisons. It's efficiency and overall applaudable position in society extends to the local Juvenile and the older Maximum Security prison, both of which it has close links with. Jimusho prides itself on reforming their inmates into respectable and well rounded individuals who can be released back into society with abundant ambition and drive.
Chief Prison warden Tomohisa Yamashita, who insists on being called Yamapi, gathers the youngest prison wardens in his office for the beginning of their shifts. Four young men stand infront of their boss all with with eager smiles and twitchy fingers. Well three do, one stands rigid with a tight lipped grimace slapped across his face. Well, nobody says you have to enjoy your job and Shige certainly finds his testing at times.
“Tegoshi-kun, we have a group of five men that have just been brought in with multiple charges of indecent exposure as well as being drunk and disorderly. Can you go down and organize some overnight cells for them please,” Yamapi gives Tegoshi an encouraging grin. Either not hearing or choosing to ignore the amused snort from Shige's direction.
“They're drunk and half naked? I don't think Tegoshi--” Shige begins, before being rudely interrupted.
“I'm on it!” Chirps the young blonde prison officer, before practically skipping down the hallway to the holding area. Yamapi turns his attention to the tallest of the men left. Unlike the other two, this man isn't wearing the standard prison warden uniform.
“Koyama, Yokoyama seems to have come down with something again. He's waiting for you in the hospital wing,” Yamapi nods to himself as he informs Koyama of his job, whilst Shige looks on, completely livid.
“Yamashita-san, there is nothing wrong with Yoko. He just likes to--”
“Poor Yoko-kun! I'll go see to him straight away,” Koyama skids out of the room, worry etched across his face. Shige is close to ripping his hair out.
“Massu, Ohkura has been caught with contraband food items. He's currently in the segregation unit.”
Shige frantically looks between the other two men in the room, “You're sending Massu to deal with contraband food? Really, I think I should--”
“Ohkura-kun again,” A bright smile, “I'll go deal with him.” Massu calmly strolls out of the room.
Finally eyes settle on him, “Shige.”
“Yes, Yamashita-san,” Shige grits his teeth and holds his tongue. It's really not his place to argue. Though he really, really wants to question his bosses qualifications and basic intelligence.
“Ryo-chan has been asking for you again,” Yamapi says softly.
“What?” Shige forgets his previous annoyance in favour of gaping at Yamapi.
“He says your talks are really making a difference to him. I've scheduled an hour for the two of you in the library. Good job Shige-kun,” A soppy smile and a dopey thumbs up. If Shige was a lesser man, he would have caved.
“You're kidding me,” Shige leans forward, putting his hands on Yamapi's desk. Eyes pleading with every ounce of his being, “Please, I'll gladly go deal with anyone else.”
Yamapi stands up and steps around his desk so he is directly in front of Shige. He gently places a hand on Shige's right shoulder, giving a quick squeeze.
“Shige, you know Ryo is an old friend of mine. It makes me so happy to hear he feels he can confide in another warden that isn't myself. I want him to be able to get through this, and you're helping him do just that,” His shoulders sag lightly. Since when has Yamapi looked so tired?
“Sometimes my emotions get the better of me when dealing with him and that is dangerous considering my position. I don't need the other inmates thinking that I am treating him special, because I'm not,” The waver in Yamapi's voice is clear and Shige feels like the worlds biggest arsehole.
Shige eventually gives in, but only because Yamapi is his boss. Really.
Shige soon finds himself sitting in front of prisoner Nishikido Ryo. Currently serving time for perverting the course of justice. The library is empty, all inmates either in their cells, the exercise yard or the recreation room. The man across from him leans back in his chair. Shige can't help but feel light apprehension and considering how long he's been doing his job, he really shouldn't be. The thought pisses him off.
“Oi, Shigeaki. I havn't got any sleep since you moved me into the cell next to the goddamn tax evader and that art forger. Do something about it,” Shige rolls his eyes. And so it begins, fantastic.
“Nishikido-san, you know I can't just move you around from cell to cell because you want to,” Shige crosses his arms and gives his best 'I am in charge' stare. Which sort of makes him look like he has a stomach ache, “Especially seeing as you were moved in the first place because the constant verbal abuse you seemed to enjoy inflicting on your previous cell mate. You do not get privileges.”
“Stupid little princess couldn't keep his mouth shut,” The prisoner growls,“But hey, at least I didn't hit him.” Ryo proudly admits. As if restraining yourself from assaulting someone should get you a pat on the back.
“You get along with your new cell mate well enough don't you?” Shige tries to start a relatively productive conversation. After all, that is what these sessions are meant to be for.
“That Shibutani guy? Yeah he's alright,” Ryo pauses before locking eyes with Shige, his gaze deadly serious, “For a murderer.”
Shige pinches the bridge of his nose, “He's not in for murder and you know that.”
Ryo shrugs and leans back in the metal chair once again.
“Is this really what you wanted to talk to me about?” Shige feels himself beginning to get agitated already and unintentionally begins to get slightly snappy.
“Have I ever told you how hot you look in that uniform?” Ryo skims his eyes up and down of what he can see of Shige's body, completely ignoring the other mans question.
Shige sets his jaw and glares at Ryo who just chuckles.
“What's up with you today?”
“Oh nothing. Yamapi just sent Tegoshi and Koyama off to get molested whilst Massu is probably eating contraband food. With the prisoner he was meant to take it off of. Everything's great, this prison is quite obviously not a joke. And don't speak to me like that. Need I remind you of who I am,” Which is rich coming from the warden who just referred to each member of staff by nick name to an inmate.
Ryo responds with a short bark of laughter, “So that's where Ohkura and Yoko have been.”
“And now I'm here, talking to you. Wasting my time,” Shige puts his hands on the table and pushes back the chair. The noise of the legs scraping on the ground echoing throughout the Library, “I'm taking you back to your cell.”
“Wait,” A hand grabs Shige's wrist and he can't help but hover his fingers over the handcuffs hanging on his left side out of habit. Ryo may have a slight temper, but he wouldn't lash out. That he does know about this particular inmate.
“This. Me and you. It's keeping me sane. As weird as that sounds,” He lets his hand drop back onto his lap and lets out a frustrated noise. Quite obviously annoyed at having to admit his true intentions. Shige slowly sits back down, giving the other man his full attention.
“I don't want Pi to worry and fuss because I know he shouldn't. He was a prison warden way before I was stuck in here and left to rot, so I know what his job entails. I don't want him to get in trouble because of me.”
“He wont. Despite what I say, I have every faith in him. He worries about you so much, but he knows his position,” Shige calmly reassures the man in front of him.
“I meant what I told him too. About our chats making a difference,” Ryo mumbles as he focuses his eyes on his hands, cleaning imaginary dirt out from under his fingernails.
Shige doesn't have a reply to that. Surely he's just bullshitting. Ryo likes to mock him because he's an easy target. That's the way it's always been, a continuous push and pull struggle between the two of them because they're far too alike then either realises.
“When Pi talks to me, I'm reminded where I am. He's on one side of the table in a black uniform, handcuffs at his side. His eyes so fucking sad. And I'm sitting here on the other side, looking at him. In shoddy mandatory t-shirt and pants, not regretting a thing. A goddamn criminal. You make me feel free again. Your eyes arn't sad for me,” He whispers the last bit and Shige has to strain his hearing to catch it, “You make me feel normal.”
That's where Shige thinks he's wrong. Shige judges. That's the problem. Jimusho isn't like other prisons in the sense that there isn't an us and them policy between the staff and inmates. Whilst the prison is no less stricter then others, Yamashita encourages the prisoners to ask for support. That's where Massu, Tegoshi and Koyama excel. They are able to offer that support whilst still managing to be authority figures that are to be obeyed and respected. Shige still finds it hard to find the humanity in any of the prisoners. All they are to him are criminals. He's got better of course, it's only natural that the others way of thinking rubs off on him. What he can't understand is why Ryo's words are making his heart beat so fast.
“We didn't have a life together before me being in here. When I talk to Yamapi, all I see are countless nights round his house. Drinking beer, watching films and hanging out. It makes me feel sick,” Ryo slams his clenched fists down onto the table. The loud noise making Shige jump slightly.
“Do you know what's getting me through each day? Knowing that when I get out, that I could maybe make those sort of memories with you,” Shige breath hitches as Ryo locks eyes with him. For the first time he truly sees the immense pain the man is in, “I'm not a complete bastard Shige, please don't think I am. ”
He looks down, his hair falling around his face covering the flush that started to colour his face from the moment he began talking. He clears his throat unnecessarily, and rakes a hand through his hair. Forcing a smile onto his face, before looking back up.
“So how about me and you go back to my cell, I'll kick Subaru out and we can make good use of those handcuffs there.”
Shige almost hates himself for smiling. Later that day, Shige kindly informs Yamapi that he and Ryo have already arranged another session for tomorrow.
Title: For You
Pairings: Sho/Jun
Rating: PG
Summary: Jun gets into a fight. Sho worries and swoons.
Notes: I'm sticking this with the Ryo/Shige one as it is from the same AU. Whether or not I do any more fics from it is another matter. This can be read on it's own though, all you really need to know is that they're in prison. Unbeta'd.
Sho knocks on the prison hospitals door tentatively. As soon as he heard of Jun and Jin's fight from Nakamaru, he practically flew down to the south wing. Abandoning his training session in the exercise yard with Ueda. It's nothing new, Jun getting into fights, but they're never usually physical. Catty and bitchy remarks are his forte, and Jun isn't exactly big or intimidating.
After a few knocks, the door creeks open and Sho is greeted by the friendly face of the prisons resident nurse.
“Koyama-san, is it all right for me to see Jun?”
“Ah, Sho-kun. Of course,” He leans forward and whispers, “He's ok, just a few cuts and bruises. He's just sulking now.” Why doesn't that surprise him.
“He's lucky he wasn't put in isolation,” Koyama says loudly, intending for Jun to hear, before walking back over to his desk.
“Jun?” Sho quickly makes his way over to the furthest bed in the room where Jun sits, arms crossed and head turned towards the barred window.
He slowly lowers himself next to the younger man but gets no response. Hesitantly, he reaches a hand out to grab Juns chin, turning his face towards him so he could assess the damage. A purple bruise already blossoming around Juns left eye and a strip of dried blood sticking to a swollen bottom lip. Somehow, still managing to look the very picture of dominance despite probably attempting to claw Jin's eyes out only an hour before. Sho's reminded of his old next door neighbours siamese cat that would hiss and scratch at any stranger that got too close. Jun may look pretty but he sure is feisty with people he doesn't like.
“I told him to not touch my face,” Comes the grumbled reply, after a few moments of Sho skimming his fingertips over every mark on Jun's face he could get to.
“I just can't believe you got yourself into another fight,” He sighs and drops his hand onto the paper cover of the hard hospital bed, “You need to control yourself Jun-kun, or you'll never get out of here.”
He scoffs, “Well what am I supposed to do when that complete idiot calls you stupid. You of all people. That kid needs to learn his place.”
Sho tries to suppress the smile that threatens to break out across his face and ignore the warm feeling spreading throughout his chest. Jun fought again, that is not a good thing. This is definitely not the time to swoon.
“Well, he's probably right. I mean, I got caught didn't I? That's why I'm here. Not exactly the best fraudster in the world.”
“We all got caught Sho-kun,” Jun shakes his head and sighs, leaning back on his hands, “Look, I'm sorry. He just has that sort of face you need to hit.”
“I thought you just said this was all because you were defending my honour?”
“Not in those words I didn't,” Jun replies, eyes sparkling and a soft smile gracing his lips. Sho mentally rejoices.
“You know, I was scared half to death when I heard you were in here.”
A full and rich laugh reaches his ears this time, “What's new? I thought you were going to have a heart attack when Aiba fell down the stairs last month.”
“Hmm. But it was nice to see you helping by pointing and laughing. Really, it warmed my heart.”
“It was hilarious,” Jun waves his hand dismissively, “Anyway, It's an unwritten rule that you have to worry. Like, 'Never get into the showers alone with Yoko' or 'Only Hina is allowed to hit Maruyama'.” Sho chooses to ignore that, since when did he become the mum of the inmates.
“So...how bad is Jin?” Sho looks around at the empty beds, “He's not in here obviously.”
“Nothing apparently Kame can't fix,” Jun screws his nose up in a disgusted manner, “Anyway, get me out of here. Nino's probably doing God only knows what in my cell as we speak.”
“Come on then,” Sho stands up with a sigh and holds out his hand to Jun. Long fingers soon grasp his and he hauls Jun up onto his feet. Wrapping a protective arm around him, he steers Jun out of the door, not before giving a quick nod to Koyama behind his desk.
“Sho”
“Hmm?”
A soft kiss is pressed against his temple.
“Thanks for worrying”
